Kickball
Kickball is something that has been near and dear to my heart since I
was a kid at Ainsworth.  When I sent out an e-mail to 25 or so
friends in August of 2005 asking if anyone wanted to join an adult
kickball league with me, I was half joking and thought it sounded
like it might be fun for maybe a season and that would be it.  Of
course, as you probably know, the story did not end there.

After cruising through the regular season that Fall of 2005 in the
Northwest Kickball League with a 10-0 record, we all figured we would
win the tournament as easily as we had won all of our games to that
point and then we'd hang up the cleats forever.  We did indeed cruise
through our first three games that day in the rain but we met up with
a team we had only heard about in the semifinals at PGE Park.

Led by the best pitcher we had seen all season, the Pour Sports
demolished and demoralized us 3-0 on the soggy field turf leaving a
taste in our mouth that wouldn't go away for a long, long time.  Not
only did losing that game hurt, but it also inspired us to come back
and win the whole thing the next time around.  We knew we had the
ability to do it!

Below you will find a historical account of all of the kickball teams
that I have been a part of over the last five or so years with photos
from each season as well.

Spring 2006 - Swashbucklers - Recess Time

As I stated earlier, this was when the whole
kickball ride began for me and for the
Swashbucklers.  We were very talented but in the
end, we were not ready for the challenge once we
finally played against a team in the playoffs that
shared our competitive fire.

Regular Season Record: 10-0
Playoff Results: 3-1
Overall Record: 13-1

The next season we found out what it takes to be
a champion.  Not only did we once again roll
through the regular season undefeated, this time
we took care of business in the playoffs as
well.  In the finals we beet the Mt. Hoodlums
4-1 to take home the Kennedy Cup.

Regular Season Record: 6-0
Playoff Results: 4-0
Overall Record: 10-0
2006 - Swashbucklers - Oregon Kickball Club

Regular Season Record: 6-0

Overall Record: 10-0

We decided to take the Swash crew into the brand
new kickball club commonly referred to as the
OKC for its inaugural season.  This was another
great season for the team, a marathon season
that saw us play 34 games stretched over five
long months. In the end, we fell to our arch
rivals once again, the Pour Sports.  However not
all was lost; we bonded as a team, and made many
friendships withing the club.

Regular Season Record: 24-3-3
Playoff Results: 3-1
Overall Record: 27-4-3
Spring 2007 - Swashbucklers - Recess Time

As defending Spring champions, we found that
there was now a huge target on our back.  And
even though we once again rolled through another
regular season undefeated, the victories did not
come as easy as they had in the past.  All of
the close wins though had us prepared and in top
form for the playoffs as we rolled through five
playoff games winning by a total score of 34-4
in those five games to successfully defend our
Spring Championship

Regular Season Record: 6-0
Playoff Results: 5-0
Overall Record: 11-0
Spring 2007 - A.A. - Underdog Sports Leagues

For the first time I branched out and played
kickball with a team other than the
Swashbucklers.  A.A. was a team made up of OKC
players who came together to try to win an
Underdog championship.  Although we fell short
of our goal (we lost in the semi finals), I met
the woman of my dreams and future wife on this
team.  The photo below is a photo of Rhiannon
and I the first time we really hung out and the
night before our first official date.

Regular Season Record: 5-2-1
Playoff Results: 1-1
Overall Record: 6-3-1
2007 - Swashbucklers - Oregon Kickball Club

Swash returned for the second season of OKC with
a chip on its shoulder and something to prove.
After starting 18-0, we went on to win the
regular season championship and entered the
playoffs as the number one seed.  We won our
four playoff games by a total score of 25-2
including a great defensive struggle in the
finals against the Shooters which ended in a 1-0
win for Swash and secured our first and only OKC
championship.

Regular Season Record: 20-2
Playoff Results: 4-0
Overall Record: 24-2
Summer 2007 - Drop Kick Kids - Recess Time

I decided to throw my name into the free agent
pool for Summer 2007 in Recess and I landed with
a really cool team of mostly Lincoln High kids.
Although we didn't perform as well as I think we
could have, the season was very fun.  We lost a
very close game to America's Freedom Champions
in the playoffs.

Spring 2008 - Swashbucklers - Recess Time

If there was a target on our back in Spring '07,
then our whole bodies were targets in Spring
'08.  As two time defending champs, we found the
going very tough in the short six-game regular
season.  Going into the 64-team tournament with
a #11 seed meant that our road to the Kennedy
Cup would be very tough.  But we knew what it
takes to win one of these things by then and won
our six playoff games by a total score of 53-10
to successfully "three-peat" as Spring Recess
champions.   Of course this was Rhiannon's first
season as a Swashbuckler.

Regular Season Record: 3-3
Playoff Results: 6-0
Overall Record: 9-3
The Swash-
bucklers
became the
first team
in Oregon
kickball
history to
own both the
OKC
Championship
trophy
(Ernie) and
the Recess
Time
Championship
trophy
(Kennedy
Cup) at the
same time.
Summer 2008 - Fat Cobras - Recess Time

Rhiannon and I joined a team of good kickball
friends and formed a championship kickball team
that clicked from day one, on and off the field.
We were a small, tight-knit group that took no
prisoners on the field but would gladly buy
beers for our opponents afterwards at the bar.
In the Tournament we had quite a run beating
four very good kickball teams along the way to
the Championship.  This was possibly my favorite
season of kickball I ever played.

Regular Season Record: 7-1-2
Playoff Results: 5-0
Overall Record: 12-1-2
2008 - Swashbucklers - Oregon Kickball Club

The Swashbucklers returned for their third
season in the Oregon Kickball Club in 2008.
We had a not great, but not terrible
regular season but went into the playoffs
with high expectations to repeat.  After
three impressive wins in the first three
rounds, we ran into a great team called the
Mustachios who took us down 3-0 at Lents
Park.

Regular Season Record: 17-4-1
Playoff Results: 3-1
Overall Record: 20-5-1
Spring 2009 - Fat Cobras - Recess Time
Summer 2009 - Fat Cobras - Recess Time
2009 - Commandos - Oregon Kickball Club

With the Swashbucklers on indefinite
hiatus, we were able to play with the Fat
Cobras for the Spring season this go
around.  Unfortunately we could not win our
second Kennedy Cup in two tries.  After a
pretty good regular season, we met our
match in the quarter finals against
Beaverton's Finest.

Another unfortunate thing is somehow not
having one photo from this season.

Playoff Results: 1-1

We had so much fun the past two seasons
that we decided to give it another go in
the Summer of '09 in an attempt to defend
our Summer '08 title.  In the largest
kickball tournament in Oregon history (98
teams!), we made it to the final 4,
eventually losing a heart breaker to the
eventual champion, Negative Reinforcement,
2-1 in extra innings.

Regular Season Record: 8-2
Playoff Results: 3-1
Overall Record: 11-3

With the Swash still on "semi-permanent,
quasi-secret hiatus," I joined Rhiannon on her
long time kickball family, The Commandos.  It was
an honor playing with a team I had admired for so
long-- first from afar and then so closely in
recent years.   We won the regular season and
tournament Championship.  My 6th kickball trophy
in 13 seasons.  This was the sweetest one yet.

Regular Season Record: 19-2
Playoff Results: 4-0
Overall Record: 23-2

record: 166-24-7
